Identifying where we need to place our social media boundaries

Writer: Abby GarrisonAbby Garrison

Last week, I asked you to do 10 journal questions.

Today, we are going to spend some time on the first four of those questions.

  1. What social media platform is most important to me?

  2. What social media platform is a time suck?

  3. What social media platform stresses me out?

  4. What social media platform do I enjoy the most?

Before we do - I want you to read this and truly believe it - there are no wrong answers here. This is our starting point. This is where we identify where we are and where we want to be. You aren't wrong. You haven't messed anything up. It's a new starting point. Okay? Good.

Let's revisit why boundaries are so important before we tackle these questions...

Boundaries put you back in control of your daily life, your business, and your time.

What social media platform is most important to me?

Which one would you be sad to no longer be on? You can answer this question for both business and personal. This is the platform you enjoy the most. The one you get most value out of. The one that you go back to if you only have a few more minutes. Maybe it's for the resources, the connections, or the things you learn on that platform.

What social media platform is a time suck?

Again, no wrong answer here. We have all been caught in the doom scroll of TikTok, Pinterest, or Instagram. We log on to search for a recipe and an hour later we are watching someone carve bars of soap. "How did I get here?" It's called an algorithm and it know what it's doing - doesn't make it any less annoying though.

Which app do you tend to find yourself doing this the most with? Once we know these answers we can start making a plan to tackle it (intentionally).

Which social media platform stresses me out?

Twitter was this one for me. I had to take it off of my phone awhile ago because I just kept seeing drama and people being upset about politics or brands or who was getting cancelled this week. It was too much and I wasn't getting any value out of it.

You may not have an answer to this one and that is completely fine. But if you do, recognize it and know that there is a solution.

What social media platform do I enjoy the most?

Again, this is one you may want to split between business and personal. Which one do you enjoy spending time on? Maybe it's looking for something fun to do for yourself, or watching tutorials, or connecting with a certain group.

This ties into our first question, but is a bit different. It's okay if you have the same answer as question one.

Spend some time answering these questions and be super honest with yourself. We are going to have a few more posts going into those questions and then make an intentional plan to identify, establish, and share social media boundaries.

While you are waiting for the next post, here are a couple things you may want to try as you begin to identify what YOU need on social media:

  • Set the intention before you log in - and write it down specifically.

  • Set a timer before you log in - and when it goes off, finish the specific task you are working on and then log off. The rest can wait.

  • Turn off the notifications. It can wait.

Try these for a few days, and then let me know how it goes! Leave a comment here or message me on Instagram.

Have an amazing rest of your week!

Cheering you on!

All the love,

Abby
